Introducing Mimi Davis and À LA CARTE MARKETING
This week, we’re highlighting Mimi Davis with À LA CARTE MARKETING. I had the joy of meeting Mimi through FemCity Des Moines‘ book club. The photo below sums Mimi up perfectly; she’s bubbly, amazingly kind, and full of positivity.
Here, Mimi shares an inside look of how she became a small business owner, including having the confidence and gumption to take the very first step. I’m inspired, and I hope you will be, too!
1. What is your business, and what do you do?
A LA CARTE MARKETING is a one-stop marketing shop for the small business owner. We bring it all together – branding, marketing, and web development – all under one roof. I am a certified coach and marketing strategist.
2. How long have you been in business?
I have been in business for 2 years.
3. What sparked your interest in becoming a small business owner?
This one is a little tougher. Honestly, I never thought about owning my own business. Oh, I might have toyed with the idea here and there over the years, but the entrepreneurial bug never bit me until 2 years ago.
You know the old cliché, when one door closes, another door opens? Well, that happened to me. One pretty significant door closed for me 2 years ago. Needless to say, when it was time to look for a new path – something inside of me stirred. Deep down, I knew I wasn’t supposed to work for “the BIG MAN.” Did I sabotage myself from finding a new 9-5 position – maybe. Or maybe, I was carving out the space to venture into a new path.
Six months after that pivotal moment – I made the decision. No turning back. No holds barred. I decided it was time to pioneer into entrepreneurship. To boldly go…okay, so I’m a Star Trek fan -but if you are reading this, and even the smallest entrepreneurial seed has been planted inside of you – let me share with you – It was the best door I have ever opened. And I encourage you – make it happen. If I can start a business with only $5.33 in my checking account – I can’t imagine what someone can do with more.
4. What gap does your business fill?
Our business really empowers other people, like myself, to take that heroic leap into entrepreneurship. I understand what it takes to start a business, the ups and down, the joys and struggles, so our business loves helping other dreamers turn that dream into reality.
I am a certified coach and marketing strategist, which gives me the ability to work with people in those times of uncertainty. That little nudge if you will to help the picture to become clearer. To really design a business that you will love.
Not only do we provide strategy, we take that strategy one step further. We provide you the guidance and resources to build and automate that strategy with proven results to build your online presence and authority.
5. What do you enjoy most about operating a business in the Des Moines metro?
Maybe it’s Des Moines, or maybe just the industry that I am in, but operating a business in Des Moines is amazingly wonderful. People are so invested in helping one another to truly flourishing. The love and support in Des Moines is abundant and the sense of community makes me thankful to be located here.
6. What is the best business-related advice you’ve received?
The best business-related advice I received was from a great friend. He said… “ if you spend the energy you waste doubting yourself on trusting yourself I will be working for you in two years.”
7. What tip do you have for other women in business?
There is no perfect time. There will always be kids, bills, laundry, lack of money…whatever that “thing” is that is holding you back from starting your own business or taking your business to the next level – it will be there. The key is to embrace it, rather than listen to it.
Understand that it is there and own it; then shift that energy and use that to drive you to reach your goal and your true potential. Life is short…If not now, when? How will your life look differently tomorrow, if you start today?
