Introducing Karen Taylor and Taylored Benefits, Inc.
Karen is an insurance industry veteran. After founding and leading a successful business in Texas, her move to Iowa brought her to Taylored Benefits, Inc., a company she operates with her husband. Yeah for husband-and-wife teams!
If you attend a FemCity Des Moines or NAWBO Iowa event, you will likely see Karen there. She is a true connector and does a fantastic job of meeting women, making them feel welcomed, and supporting their work. Learn more about Karen below!
1. What is your business, and what do you do?
I come up with creative, affordable health insurance solutions for my clients.
2. How long have you been in business?
My husband founded Taylored Benefits, Inc. in 1996. I joined the company in 2014 when we got married. When I lived in Austin, I founded a Farmer Insurance office in 1987 and later sold the business. I joined UBS to assist with their Private Client Services team. I think insurance is in my DNA.
3. What sparked your interest in becoming a small business owner?
I love working one to one with my clients. With larger insurance agencies, once a case is sold, the account is transferred to a customer service team. With TBI, I continue to work directly with my clients. I may not office with them, but I know everything that is happening with their business. Some of our clients have been with us over 20 years.
4. What gap does your business fill?
Health Insurance has never been more confusing. I try to assist my clients by researching all carriers in the Iowa Market. By doing so, I can find the best health insurance solutions possible and minimize the cost. Women continue to have babies, and people get sick or have accidents. Most of us cannot possibly pay for these expenses out of our pocket. Health insurance prevents a financial disaster.
5. What do you enjoy most about operating a business in the Des Moines metro?
I meet many incredible, interesting, talented people here in DSM. I get excited hearing about so many new, creative companies. I love the variety!
6. What is the best business-related advice you’ve received?
Always keep the best interests of your client in mind. My clients come first.
7. What tip do you have for other women in business?
Realize your value and how you impact others . A prospect may not work with you immediately, but when the time is right, it will all work for the best.
