Introducing How I Flourish in Des Moines
I’ve kept a secret, and I’m thrilled to share it with you! A new series, How I Flourish in Des Moines, is headed to the blog every Friday (starting next week).
Recently, I’ve spent a good chunk of time thinking about how the good and bad days of life as a small business owner string together to tell our stories. While one week or month can feel defeating, it’s the endurance to keep going that paints a beautiful picture.
So many businesses are blossoming in Des Moines. As a resident, it’s exciting to see new restaurants, shops, and developments pop up. (Hello, upcoming Waukee movie theater!) As a business owner, I’m proud to see so many entrepreneurs following their dreams, filling gaps, and providing unique experiences.
As part of FemCity Des Moines, I am lucky to meet many of these business owners each month. These women are passionate about their ‘why’. They pour hours into passion projects to lift them off the ground. Ideas become budding endeavors, side hustles turn into full-time pursuits, and businesses become recognizable brands building awareness locally (and beyond).
Through FemCity’s newest initiative, Flourish, we’re tapping into the local Des Moines community to help small business prosper.
Until Aug. 31, we are accepting applications for local female small business owners’ next big ideas. The applicant pool is narrowed down to three finalists with the help of an external review board, and these three finalists will pitch their big ideas at our Nov. 12 Flourish event. From 6 to 8 p.m. we will gather as a community, packing The Hall in Valley Junction, listen to these passionate business owners, and vote to decide the winner of Flourish funds (compiled from ticket purchases and donations).
We can’t wait to help fund an idea that matters later this year.
What to expect from this blog series
In the meantime (and beyond), I plan to highlight women who are bettering others’ lives and making a positive impact on the Des Moines community. These features will go live every Friday, and you’ll be able to learn about the story behind their business and experience as a small business owner.
I hope How I Flourish in Des Moines inspires you to go after your dream and stick with it. My life is exponentially better off because of knowing these ladies, and I think yours will be as well after reading their posts.
Next week I’m kicking this series off with Regan Doely of Doe a Deer Design. Check back to learn a bit of the story behind her graphic design and handmade product brand!
