Introducing Dorene MacVey and ithrive31®
This week, we’re highlighting Dorene MacVey and her coaching and personal development company, ithrive®. I had the pleasure of meeting Dorene through NAWBO’s Iowa chapter and am happy to see her at both NAWBO and FemCity Des Moines events.
Here, Dorene shares a small business perspective we haven’t covered yet in the How I Flourish in Des Moines series: going out on your own and launching a business after a successful corporate career. Learn more about the meaning behind her business name and how she’s building community after moving across Iowa.
1. What is your business, and what do you do?
I created and own a business called ithrive31®, LLC A Coaching and Personal Development Company.
What do I do? I help people thrive in their workplaces and in their homes by providing leadership and professional coaching and personal development programs.
2. How long have you been in business?
I received my registered trademark for ithrive31® in March 2017 and officially started my business in June 2017 when I moved to Des Moines, Iowa. I have always had a dream of building a business so after over 25 years in Corporate America — I made the leap!
3. What sparked your interest in becoming a small business owner?
For me — I love the idea of creating a business from scratch and seeing where I can take it. I chose this business because I have a passion around encouraging and supporting others in this sometimes crazy, overwhelming world we live in. I think it is a good use of my business experience, my talents and my heart’s calling.
People always ask me about the name. Why did you pick the name “ithrive31” ? It is based on fundamental principles for how I want to build and grow my business:
“i” –Personal accountability and taking responsibility for one’s own growth and development is a core value for ithrive31® coaching and personal development programs.
“thrive” – Everything I do is driven by the mission of helping individuals thrive – in their workplaces, in their homes, and in their communities.
“31” – I believe that personal success comes when individuals set realistic goals, experience immediate progress, and create momentum for continued success. My coaching and personal development programs use a 31-day process to drive rapid results and empower progress. Afterall, baby steps can lead to big things!
Looking into the future, my dream is to create programs and coaching services around the core philosophy of ithrive31® that can be licensed in other markets.
4. What gap does your business fill?
Coaching can be so powerful. Done well, coaching can help people see things from a new perspective, make changes in their work/life to reach new heights, gain self-confidence, generate personal insight and ultimately make a positive impact for themselves and those around them.
ithrive31® offers a unique approach for coaching leaders and professionals in the workplace. I work with clients to set both professional and personal goals, I use a 31-day planning approach to help clients see immediate progress, and I have a 3-phase method for lasting change and success. My style of coaching is very personal, authentic and is focused on making an impact for both the individual and their organization. I firmly believe that when individuals thrive, their company succeeds.
The personal development programs I provide through ithrive31® are consistent with the 31 day approach and a proprietary model of well-being. This includes six life areas: Financial, Physical, Emotional, Professional, Relationship and Spiritual along with three core principles: 1) Be Intentional with Your Thoughts, 2) Be Deliberate with Your Time and Resources and 3) Be Purposeful in How you Treat Your Body. Currently, I offer 1-3 hour workshops/sessions on: Living Intentionally™, 31 days of Gratitude™, and The Thriving Woman™
5. What do you enjoy most about operating a business in the Des Moines metro?
The amazing people I have met! It was really humbling for me to come to a new city and not know anyone. At the same time, I was making a significant career transition from corporate America to being an entrepreneur….it was a bit overwhelming, to say the least!
I have loved being a part of women’s groups like FemCity and NAWBO. The women I have met are talented, supportive and fun to be around. There is such energy when women support women! I also love the developmental opportunities that are offered through the Des Moines Partnership, Iowa Center for Economic Success and other non-profit organizations in the community.
Personally….I love all the festivals, great restaurants and being closer to my family who live in Ankeny and West Des Moines.
6. What is the best business-related advice you’ve received?
As a mother, wife and business professional — I always wrestled with the “work/life” thing like everyone other woman. The best advice I got about juggling my work and family:
“As a driven, successful business woman, you will always be juggling multiple balls — it’s inevitable. It’s also inevitable that some will fall. The key to balance is to know which balls are the glass balls to your family — and never let those fall.”
7. What tip do you have for other women in business?
NEVER. GIVE. UP. Frankly, I think that is true in business and in life . You may need to adjust, tweak, take a detour, be patient but if you have a dream or a goal, you should pursue it fully and be in for the long haul.
Surround yourself with support (and…..be supportive to others!) Find people who lift you up and bring energy into your life. Not everyone will do that so find the people who will. Then hang out with them – a lot.
Always give yourself some grace and never forget why you pursued this dream.
